Scottish Power: Compare, Reviews & Tarffis

About Scottish Power

Scottish Power, or ScottishPower as the company is occasionally spelled, was formed in 1990. It was founded in anticipation of the privatisation of Scotland’s previously state-owned power business the following year and has developed tremendously since then.

ScottishPower is now a subsidiary of Iberdrola, one of the largest integrated utility companies in the world and a market leader in wind energy.

Scottish Power Electricity & Gas Tariffs

Scottish Power tariffs are very straight-forward.

See the list below and then compare and switch your energy to see if ScottishPower could be cheaper for you.

The tariff options are as follows:

  • Standard/variable/ default tariff – If you haven’t agreed to a contract (if you have just moved house for example) or your previous deal has expired, you’ll be on this tariff. The costs change depending on wholesale, distribution and taxation costs. There are more cost-effective tariffs available if you compare and switch your energy through a price comparison service like Switch Squid. You will also be affected by the OFGEM Energy Price Cap. See our guide for more information on the Energy Price Cap.
  • 1 Year Fixed Price Energy – 12 month fixed term. Online account management. £30 per fuel exit fee.
  • 1 Year Fixed Price Energy + Boiler Insurance – 12-month fixed term. Online account management. Includes 12 months boiler insurance plan. £30 per fuel exit fee.
  • 2 Years Fixed Price Energy + Boiler Service & Maintenance – 2 years fixed term. No exit fees. Includes a boiler service and Maintenance plan.

Scottish Power: Green energy

ScottishPower state that all their domestic green tariffs are backed by 100% green electricity generated by their UK-based wind farms.

They also state that they are the only supplier that backs their green energy tariffs with 100% green energy that they generate themselves and claims that other suppliers that state the same aren’t entirely ‘Green’.

This is a practice known as ‘Greenwashing’.

You can learn more about Greenwashing in our guide here.

Their investment into sustainability is enormous with the equivalent of £6m a day invested into reaching Net-Zero by 2050.

Customer Service Rating

ScottishPower’s call centre is open 8:30am – 7pm Monday to Friday & 8:30am – 4pm on Saturday.

Much like other Top – Six energy suppliers, Scottish Power lack in this field.

Citizens advice rated them 2.5 stars out of 5 for customer service for data collected January – March 2021 when looking at Fewer Complaints, Ease of Contact, Clearer Bills, Ease of Switch and Customer Guarantees.

You may find that switching your gas and electricity to ScottishPower to be more favourable when comparing your energy bills.
