What Is OVO Energy?

OVO Energy was founded in 2009 by Stephen Fitzpatrick with a mission to make energy cheaper, greener, and simpler. In January 2020, OVO acquired SSE's retail customer base — adding 3.5 million households and becoming one of the UK's three largest domestic energy suppliers.
OVO Group encompasses energy supply, boiler and central heating services (HomePlan), EV charging, solar, and an intelligent energy platform. The parent company targets net-zero emissions by 2035 and plants one million trees annually through its Planting Promise.

OVO or Octopus — which is actually cheaper in 2026?

Both OVO Energy and Octopus Energy regularly appear at the top of price comparison results, but the winner depends entirely on your postcode, usage level, and meter type. The cheapest option varies by region and changes as tariffs update throughout the year.
OVO's Planting Promise includes carbon offsetting and free tree planting with every tariff, while Octopus's Intelligent tariff rewards time-shifting energy use to off-peak hours. These extras only matter if they align with how your household actually uses power.
Don't guess — Switch will show you the exact projected annual cost for both OVO and Octopus based on your real address and usage. A live comparison takes under five minutes.
